Frequently asked questions for DE's return to school

In the aftermath of October 13’s fire at DE’s. main campus, we are making temporary arrangements to ensure all our students have a safe environment conducive to learning. Beginning Monday, October 25 and while repairs continue, our in-person learning for PreK-4th graders will be at DE’s main campus at 3700 Tall Pines Drive and 5th-8th graders will be at the DE Annex, located at 3819 Herschel St. Please know that these temporary changes will not affect the quality of instruction or the caring of the staff for our students. PREK-4th at DE Main Campus

When are students returning to school?
All students returned to in-person learning on Monday, October 25.

At which location will PreK-4th graders attend classes?
PK – 4th grade students will attend the DE main campus (3700 Tall Pines Drive) daily for in-person learning. 

Is it safe for students to return to DE main campus?
The New Orleans Fire Department, NOLA Public Schools, and additional inspectors have deemed the downstairs safe for the return of students and staff for in-person learning. View letter from NOLA-PS about the safety of the DE Campus.

What time does school start for PreK-4th?
The school day will continue to start at 7:45 a.m.

When is dismissal for PreK-4th?
Dismissal will begin at the same time: 3:20 p.m. daily. Additionally, check out time at the DE main campus ends at 2:30 p.m. daily. 

When is the checkout cut off for PreK-4th?
PreK-4th grade students cannot be checked out after 2:30. pm. 

5th-8th at DE Annex

When are students returning to school?
All students returned to in-person learning on Monday, October 25.

At which location will 5th-8th graders attend classes?
5th – 8th grade students will have in-person learning at the former P. B. Habans’ site, located at 3819 Herschel St., New Orleans 70114, located diagonally from the United States Post Office. We will call this location the DE Annex to avoid any confusion.

How long will students be at this location?
Repairs required to the second floor of the main DE Campus are under way and expected to be completed in roughly thirty (30) days. During this time, DE middle school students will attend classes at the DE Annex location until repairs are completed.

What time does school start for 5th-8th?
The school start time at the DE Annex will be 7:30 a.m. 

What time is drop off for 5th-8th?
The morning carpool lane will be on Mercedes Blvd. and will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 8 a.m. Students who ride the school bus will be dropped off at the DE Annex site on Halsey Ave. each morning.

When is dismissal for 5th-8th?
The dismissal time at the DE Annex will begin at 3:10 p.m. Students who ride the school bus will be picked up from the DE Annex site on the Halsey Ave. and brought to Eisenhower to join the PK-4th bus riders. This will allow middle school students with siblings to ensure their sibling gets on the school bus before heading home. 5th-8th grade car riders will be dismissed from DE Annex. 

What time is car pickup for 5th-8th?
During afternoon dismissal the carpool lane on Mercedes Blvd will open at 3:10 p.m. and close at 3:40 p.m. daily. Current walkers have the option of becoming bus riders or car riders. 

When is the checkout cut off for 5th-8th?
Additionally, check out time at the DE Annex site ends at 2:15 p.m. daily. Students cannot be checked out after 2:15 p.m. 

Will students have tech and supplies at DE Annex?
The DE Annex is fully prepared for our students to allow for a seamless transition All classroom Chromebooks have been brought to this temporary site to ensure our students still have access to technology with internet access. All classroom and office supplies are on-site for our students and teachers to continue with high quality instruction. 

Will there be a main office to contact someone at DE Annex?
Yes, this temporary site will have an office secretary. The number for the DE Annex is 504-259-2632.

Will there be security at DE Annex?
Yes, this temporary site will have a School Resource Officer and safety protocols, just like main campus.

What is the office number at DE Annex?

General Questions

What about student safety in the building?
Multiple inspectors have deemed the first floor of DE Main Campus safe for students and staff to return. Additionally, all COVID-19 safety protocols & mandates will still be required & enforced for students and staff at both locations. Each campus will also have a School Resource Officer.

What school administrators will be in the buildings?

Each campus will have the following on site daily: an Academy Principal, an Instructional Coach, and a school Dean. 

What about dress code?
All students should be in full uniform Monday through Wednesday and follow the dress down dress code Thursday and Friday. 

Please note: students can wear any coat, jacket or sweater to school; however, in the classroom/hallway, students can only wear the DE outer gear purchased at local uniform shops. If you choose not to purchase DE outer gear, your child(ren) can only wear a solid (no writing or images on it) blue, black or red coat, jacket, or sweater in the classroom/hallway. 

What about breakfast and lunch?
All students will continue to receive breakfast and lunch at both locations. 

What about PBIS and academic recognition?
PBIS activities & academic celebrations will continue at both sites 

What about pull-out services?
All 504, ESL, and special education (including gifted & talented) services will continue 

Will there be enrichment classes?
Yes, all students will continue to have in-person enrichment classes at both locations. 

Will students have access to a nurse?
Our school nurse will split her time between the locations. 

Will students have access to a social worker?

Our school social worker will split her time between the locations. 

What about extra-curricular activities?
Unfortunately, all after-school activities are on hold until further notice. More information will be given soon about athletic tryouts, practices, aftercare, in-person tutoring, and Homecoming events.
